Ørskov, Ida (Statens Seruminstitut, Copenhagen, Denmark), and Frits Ørskov. Episome-carried surface antigen K88 of Escherichia coli. I. Transmission of the determinant of the K88 antigen and influence on the transfer of chromosomal markers. J. Bacteriol. 91:69-75. 1966.-The transmission of the determinant of the Escherichia coli K88 antigen in mixed cultures of E. coli strains is described. The K88 factor could not be transferred by filtrates, nor could responsible phages or colicines be detected. Acriflavine was shown to "cure" the bacteria for the K88 antigen. Generally, the strains having acquired the K88 antigen also acquired the ability to transfer chromosomal markers, but this ability was in some cases retained by segregants which had lost the K88 antigen. Introduction into an F(+) strain caused reduction of the recombination frequency and disappearance of the f(+) antigen. Not all wild-type strains with the K88 antigen are genetic donors of this antigen, at least not to a discernible degree. It was concluded that the K88 antigen determinant is carried by an episome.

Prevalence of Fimbrial Antigen (K88 variants, K99 and 987P) of Enterotoxigenic Escherichia Coli from Neonatal and Post-weaning Piglets with Diarrhea in Central China
Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli is a major cause of diarrhea in neonatal and post-weaning piglets. To determine the most common fimbrial antigens of ETEC in piglets with diarrhea, two investigations were carried out on intensive pig farms in Hubei province, central China. In 2002-2003, 227 fecal samples from neonatal and post-weaning piglets with diarrhea were tested for the presence of the fi...

Strains of Escherichia coli capable of causing diarrhea in young pigs are often able to proliferate in the upper small intestine of the infected animal due to the presence of a specific surface antigen, K88. The genetic determinants for K88 antigen production and the ability to utilize the trisaccharide raffinose (Raf) are carried on a 50-megadalton plasmid. Recombinant deoxyribonucleic acid te...

A total of 205 Escherichia coli isolates from 88 diarrheal weanling (4- to 10-week-old) pigs from 59 farms were tested by slide agglutination for K88, K99, F41, and 987P antigens. K88 antigen was detected in 61% of the isolates representing 60% of the pigs and 56% of the farms. K88 antigen was associated with serogroup O149 and 91% of the K88+ isolates. K99, F41, and 987P were not detected. Of ...
متن کاملImmunogenicity of a Fusion Protein Comprising Coli Surface Antigen 3 and Labile B Subunit of Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli
Background: Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) strains are the major causes of diarrheal disease in humans and animals. Colonization factors and enterotoxins are the major virulence factors in ETEC pathogenesis. For the broad-spectrum protection against ETEC, one could focus on colonization factors and non-toxic heat labile as a vaccine candidate. Methods: A fusion protein is composed of a...
متن کاملEfficacy of dietary supplementation of bacteriophages in treatment of concurrent infections with enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli K88 and K99 in postweaning pigs
Postweaning diarrhea or colibacillosis is a costly disease causing substantial mortality, as well as growth retardation, in swine production.1-3 Colibacillosis is typically associated with avid intestinal adhesion and fecal shedding of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). The ETEC causing diarrhea in postweaning pigs carries the F4 (K88) or F18 fimbrial antigen in most cases.4-6 The F5 (K99...
